Barbosa, Lorena

Welcome! I am ready to start a wonderful and successful school year.

I believe in the challenge to give all children the opportunity to become bilingual.  My personal opportunity to be bilingual came through the public schools.  I grew up in Juarez, Mexico and moved to El Paso when I was twelve years old.  I received my Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Bilingual Education from The University of Texas at El Paso.  This is my thirty-third year teaching and I am starting my twenty-seven year at Mesita.

We have designed our dual language program based on the 50-50 model; fifty-percent of our instruction will be in English and fifty percent in Spanish.  My goal for this year is that the students will continue to gain communication skills in two languages, while successfully mastering their academic skills at or above grade level in both languages.
Please help me to encourage your child throughout this year to continue learning in both languages.  It is quite normal that they might feel lost when taught in their non-native language but they will be allowed to help each other as much as I feel necessary.  Assure your child that this is part of learning a new language and in no way this makes them “less smart.”

My conference period is from 2:00-2:45 p.m.
